Victoria Azarenka has defeated Julia Goerges of Germany in the second round of Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2013. Azarenka won the match in the straight sets by 6-2, 6-0.
It was a fully one sided contest. Azarenka was in full flow and she took just one hour to demolish her opponent and knock her out of the tournament.
This was the 6th match between these two players and Azarenka defeated Goerges for the 5th time.
In the post match interview, Azarenka said, “It’s always good to start a tournament with a big win. I was focussed right from the outset and didn’t commit too many unforced errors. I need to keep this going in the upcoming matches as well.”
On the other hand, Goerges was not looking pleased at all with how things went in the match. The German player said, “I am really gutted with my performance today. Playing against Azarenka was always going to be tough, but, I had expected myself to perform a bit better than this.”
The victory was not unexpected by fans – the best online betting offers had Azarenka at just under evens – but the manner of the victory was surprising.
In the first set, Azarenka started with a bang. With a couple of consecutive breakthroughs (in the 1st and the 3rd game), she was off to a lead of 4-0. She calmly won her remaining service games after that and sealed the set by 6-2.
In the second set, Goerges’ performance dipped down even further. She couldn’t win even one game in that set. The Belarusian player got three breakthroughs in a row and finished off the match in a hurry. It was Azarenka’s 20th victory in the ongoing season.
In her next match, Azarenka will face the Japanese player Ayumi Morita who made her way into the third round with the help of a straight set victory over Urszula Radwanska of Poland.
