Wawrinka Out By Dimitrov

August 7, 2014

Stanislas Wawrinka’s wonderful journey in the Aegon Championships ended yesterday as he got beaten by Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in the straight sets in the semi final round. Dimitrov won the match by 6-2, 6-2.

This result was kind of unexpected despite the fact that Dimitrov had been in fantastic form in the tournament. It was being thought that he would find it very difficult to match Wawrinka who has been one of the most in form players on the tour this season, but, the Bulgarian showed that anything is possible if you are determined. He brought out his ‘A’ game on the big day and sent Wawrinka packing.

Wawrinka who is the third ranked player in the world was terribly frustrated at the end of the match and he broke his racquet out of frustration. One can understand that feeling of his though. This title just before the Wimbledon Championships would have boosted his confidence big time, but, he lost the opportunity.

Wawrinka and Dimitrov had faced each other a couple of times before as well and in both those contests, the later had been completely outplayed. But, neither of those two games was on grass courts. It’s the first time that these two were up against each other on grass and Dimitrov showed his potency on the green surfaces.

Both these players had been beaten in their opening round matches at Roland Garros and thus, it was important for them to do well at Queen’s Club to go to the All England Club being positive. Both would have preferred to win the title, but, now, it’s only Dimitrov who can do it.

The Bulgarian will have the Spaniard Feliciano Lopez as his opponent in the final match. If he defeats him and wins the title, it will be the 4th singles title of his career.

Mardy Fish is all set to try out his luck for US Open

July 2, 2014

Mardy Fish seems ahead by one step to qualify for the prestigious U.S. Open championship in Golf. Since the last 6 months, the former number seven in the world has been swinging to and fro, instead of his racquet. At the sectional qualifiers, he bagged an alternative position in the upcoming major, this week, at the TPC Valencia.

Since his last ATP tour in Washington which took place around ten months ago, Fish hasn’t been part of the tour and missed the mark by just two strokes. However he made just through for the alternate position by scoring the payoff hole.

Talking about his game he commented on the official website of the U. S. Open, saying that he is accustomed to such pressure times. However he feels there lays a striking difference between playing golf professionally and facing off someone of a court of tennis. In case of tennis, the situation is much simpler, since either you bag the game or lose it. However as far as golf is concerned, it feels like you are losing, however you actually aren’t.

The former American Tennis star and now golfer made a terrific start; however slipped down gradually and finished by messing up the fifteenth, sixteenth and 17th hole. Talking about his experience when he needs to dominate an opponent during a match of tennis, Fish commented that, all he keeps on asserting himself that he has to work hard for the next 15 to 20 minutes post which he will be celebrating in the locker room with the game in his kitty. However, it is kind of impossible doing that in a game of golf.

If, Fish at all qualifies for the golf U.S Open, he with be the 3rd player to do so post Frank corner and Ellsworth Vines, who competed in both the U.S. Opens.

Schiavone Becomes Victim Of Major Upset

June 21, 2014

Francesca Schiavone became victim of another major upset in this year’s French Open as she was beaten by the Croatian youngster Ajla Tomljanovic in the opening round. The Italian veteran lost in the straight sets by 3-6, 3-6.

It might have been the last time that Schiavone made an appearance at Roland Garros. She is going to be 34 years of age pretty soon and the way her performances have been going downhill quite continuously; it seems highly unlikely that she would push herself for one more season.

In her 16 years old professional career thus far, Schiavone has won just one Grand Slam and that triumph had come at Roland Garros only 4 years back in 2010. She had done remarkably well in the French Open in the following year as well i.e. in 2011 when she made it to the title round.

So, she has been a good clay court player over the years and thus, even at this stage of her career, nobody had expected her to be sent packing from the very first round in the French Open, but, that happened.

More than the defeat, the thing which would worry the Schiavone fans is that she couldn’t compete at all against a player who is more than 10 years younger than her.

In just about 1 hour and 20 minutes, Tomljanovic crushed Schiavone with extreme authority.

Schiavone has fallen down quite significantly in the world rankings in the last few months because of her poor form. She is currently not even one of the top 100 players in the world. She is ranked at the 130th position. She would definitely like to climb up a little bit in the rankings with some good performances in the grass court season.
